II. ANAKLIA
Georgia has always been a crossroad between Western Asia and Eastern Europe, which again today can’t be more visible. Since its establishment as a modern republic, based on a constructed idealization and memorialization of its pre-Soviet past, Georgian culture and identity are saturated with paradoxes. One of the central ones being the country's struggle of association between East and West.
Spending most of my trip in the mountains, I set out to document these structures, all along the beach line of Anaklia, lying directly on the border of Abkhazia, right where a militarized zone of earthen blockades and bunkers ends. Built by the Soviet powers fifty years ago and long forgotten, yet still indestructible and concealed, they acquired a monumental valuein their state of non-use, discarded reminders of the former glory.
